The Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra Auditions

2020-2021 Season

We are excited that you want to audition for the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra! Please fill out the audition form, and submit it online. You should receive a confirmation email that includes a link to the excerpts. Also please read the requirements for auditioning closely, and email gshaw@thejacksonsymphony.org with any questions you might have!

 

String requirements*:

  1. You should be able to play all major scales in as many octaves that you feel comfortable. A few will be heard on the day of the audition.

  2. Have a two minute solo or etude prepared that you feel demonstrates your current ability and level of playing. Please remember to bring two paper copies of your piece to the audition for the judges.

  3. You should prepare the entire linked excerpt for your instrument. A selection from that excerpt will be heard on the day of the audition.

  4. There will be sight reading heard at the audition. You will have one minute to look over it, and then will be asked to play it to the best of your ability.

Woodwinds and Brass requirements:

  2. Have a two minute solo or etude prepared that you feel demonstrates your current ability and level of playing. Please remember to bring two paper copies of your piece to the audition for the judges.

  3. You should prepare the entire linked excerpt for your instrument. A selection from that excerpt will be heard on the day of the audition.

  4. There will be sight reading heard at the audition. You will have one minute to look over it, and then will be asked to play it to the best of your ability.

 

Percussion requirements:

  1. You will be required to perform the linked excerpt on timpani. A selection will be heard at the audition.

  2. Please prepare a short solo or solo line on either marimba or snare to play for us. If you could provide two paper copies of the solo for the judges, that would be quite helpful.

  3. There will be sight reading for snare that you will be given one minute to look over, and then execute to the best of your ability.
